CONVIVIUM:
Food Systems at the Limit

Opening: April 22, 2026, 7 pm | Duration: April 23, 2026 – October 18, 2026

The global food system, a complex web of production and distribution, is increasingly strained by the capitalist demand for growth, leading to a destructive cycle of overconsumption, waste, and environmental degradation. As climate change, overfishing, and soil erosion push these networks to their limits, the industry itself continues to fuel the crisis through significant carbon emissions, leaving most nations unable to achieve food self-sufficiency.

Through twelve thematic chapters, the exhibition illustrates these spatial and technical foundations, focusing on the European landscape while highlighting the global challenges and future opportunities inherent in how we feed the world.

Exhibition

Salmon farming has grown into a global industry. However, this growth comes at a high price: wild-caught fish are processed into fishmeal to serve as feed for the farm-raised fish.

Overfishing has led to the collapse of small-scale local fisheries in some coastal regions of West Africa. Consequently, many people have lost their livelihoods and have been forced to migrate to the Canary Islands.

Of those who survive the dangerous crossing, some end up working illegally and in precarious conditions in the tomato greenhouses of Almería.

Experience the social and ecological impacts of globalised supply chains through two supermarket staples. The exhibition features immersive, life-size installations of a greenhouse and migrant kitchen, large-scale drone orthophotography, investigative photojournalism, documentary film, sculpture and two books—a children's book and participatory recipe book.

The story takes the viewer on a journey from global trade to its impacts for the people affected and exploited by the food on our supermarket shelves. Step into the world of Food Imperialism.
